The Next Step in Dismantling our Democracy

The election of dt was not the first step in dismantling our democracy. As a matter of fact it started back in the 80s with Reagan and perhaps before. Reagan’s firing the air traffic controllers after their strike for better pay/working conditions was a strike against the working class, limiting their right to unionize and defend themselves, and showed support for business (the darling of the GOP). His chipping away at the Glass-Steagall Act—that came to be as an answer to what caused the great depression—gave way to Clinton ultimately repealing a much-weakened law with no teeth, which gave way 8-10 years later to the great recession.
For over 50 years the Glass-Steagall Act protected the country from the banking industry’s greed and illegal activity witnessed in causing the great recession. This chipping away, in turn, has a huge effect on income inequality, which keeps the working poor poor and disappears the middle class. Of course, all of this happened over years, because if it happened over night those voters supporting the politicians with these ideologies would be recognized for what they are and voted out of office. But since erosion happens over years the spin-doctors have time to justify the horrible outcomes from their policies...the Mexicans are the cause ….the Muslims are the problem...those damn liberal retards are so stupid… the blacks are getting too many break...food stamps are costing too much…we need to decrease Social Security Medicare, Medicaid they cost too much…welfare and social programs that’s the big problem.
Welfare for the rich is the real problem. The recent tax give-away to the rich and corporations is a prime example. Then the more recent tax cut adds to economic class division and has cemented the roll of the oligarchy that now rules our country.
When you have the majority of the country not being heard and instead being overruled, the democracy’s “majority rules” goes out the window.
Look at the recent confirmation of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. What a joke! What a farce! What a Sham! What a ____________! (you fill in the blank). The GOP is so proud of their accomplishment of placing a very, very questionable justice after rejecting a very, very qualified justice nominated by President Obama. They played dirty as usual and won. America lost.
The Supreme Court will be viewed suspiciously from now on. This is the highest authority on our laws, now diminished. Why? Because the GOP leader Mitch McConnell views a Republican win bigger and more important than a win for the United States. His whole tenure has been party win and to hell with the country. Check out his huge increase in his personal wealth in the last 5 years. Pay for play.
And with all of this evidence, they still get voted into office by voters who are more like sports fans than social supporters. They cheer and vote for “the team” rather than the player, thus we get ridiculously ignorant people in office (check out the US president as an example). They will vote for him because he is a Christian and has an R beside his name, not because he will do what is right and good for the country, or even his voters.
And now several days since I started writing the piece, Mitch McConnell drops another bomb: social programs, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, are causing the huge national debt and need to be cut. Forget the 1.2 trillion dollars they added by their tax cut that didn’t go to you, the average working American. No, it went to THEM and people like them. So, disgusting and yet the ignorant Republican supporter will vote for the same candidates that hinder their chance for a quality of life they could have. And they, both the screwed and the screwer, do it with a smile.
Sick of it all? Take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning!
