Wishy-Washy Candidates Trash-talk then Support the Party

JoeB

Don’t you get tired of political candidates tearing each other apart like rabid jackals after a fresh kill? He’s a con man. She’s a liar. He is the worst candidate our party has ever run. She is not who she says she is. On and on it goes. Where does it stop? The negative infighting among one’s party stops at the conclusion of the primary cycle when one candidate is nominated (by hook or by crook) by their party to represent said party in the upcoming election.

This second-grade behavior is not limited to the presidential election. This same attitude goes all the way down through national and state congressional elections, local mayoral races, school board positions, to the election of “dog catcher.” Right now, the presidential election is in our faces and inescapable. So let’s deal with it.

Here we are in another presidential primary season and this one is a whopper! We have typical politicians promising the world “if only I’m elected”, the same “what’s wrong with the country” speeches about how the present President did ‘this and that’ all wrong, and we are all going to crash and burn following such a shallow misguided doctrine and visitation for our future. They purport to know the answers, have the solutions, and the way to implement this masterful wonderful plan for the American people, which of course will be in the best (or worst) interest of said people.

Or the other side; the prevailing attitude is that this President is great, has been and will continue to be a great President, and, as a candidate looking to replace this great President, I have and will continue to support his ideas and plans (even though when running against this great president eight years ago he was a bum , a con job, a bigot, liar, etc.)

All of this bluster, all of this “make the other guy look bad” stuff, all of this airing the dirty laundry by the candidates has a real negative effect on the voters. Whether or not a particular candidate gets the nod to represent his/her party, they are PARTY MEMBERS all the way. So that bigot, that homophobe, that con man, that liar, that worst candidate, that no-good, that person unfit for the position, that wacky candidate with those wacky ideas, that whatever IS A HECK OF A LOT BETTER THAN THAT bigot, that homophobe, that con man, that liar, that worst candidate, that no-good, that person unfit for the position, that wacky candidate with the wacky ideas, that whatever, representing the OTHER PARTY.

So yes, I support the bigot, that homophobe, that con man that…………from OUR party.

How can that be? Are you, the losing candidate, now saying this horrible unfit person is now pure and worthy? Are you saying this total numb nut will be a great President for our country?

In the present GOP primaries, the powers that be in the GOP do not want Donald Trump to be their nominee. There have been moves by them to block his steam rolling primary run as he gathers the much needed delegates. They say he will ruin the party. They say he will not be a good republican president, furthering republican ideals and republican doctrine. He is a “loose canon,” not “one of us.” All the while the members of the GOP (Senator John McCain is a good example) are saying if Donald Drumpf is the winner of the primaries, be he good, bad, or indifferent, they will support him simply because they are republicans. (Democrats are no better; they do the same. I only use the “Drumpf” example as it surfaced on the news the night before I wrote this post.)

So Mr. McCain, and politicians everywhere, let me get this straight: regardless of the qualifications of the other candidate, your party’s candidate is better just because he/she is a member of YOUR PARTY. If he/she has that R or D signifying party behind their name, that makes them better? That one letter, that symbol of comradery, that oneness that comes from being a member of the same fraturnity, religious order, club or team? America’s well-being be damned!

It strikes me that as my wife says, “Politics is a lot like college football, no matter how good or bad your team is you root for them over the other team.” Quality of the players makes no difference. The outcome of the game makes no difference. The future of the University makes no difference. The only important thing is rooting for your team even though half the team is on probation (or “Double Secret Probation as the Deltas were), and the other half is drunk on the sidelines.

And rightly so, we should support OUR team and root for OUR team, and do all we can for OUR team…IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL!

But should we support, root for and do all we can for a team when they don’t have the best person for the job? When they don’t put forth the person who will do the best job for our country and the world? When they don’t have the best person to be President? Should we?

Shouldn’t we care more for the country than the party? Aren’t our neighbors’ well-being more important than party lines? Isn’t the world and our earth more important than party loyalty?

Uh-oh, feeling a little queezy, a little uneasy thinking of The Other Team. Headache coming on?

Take two aspirins and call me in the morning!
