They're Not Like Us

….Had enough of the disagreements around xenophobia, immigration, Black Lives Matter, to build or not to build (the wall)……got a headache? Upset stomach?

I suppose the American Indians would have been better off if they hadn’t let the pilgrims land and set up a colony, like “we don’t want you here go home!” And by letting them stay and even helping them survive, they paved the way for their own demise. ( An Indian chief once said that the white man broke many promises but kept one:”They said they would take our land and they took our land.”

So maybe this experience is the reason behind the white American being ever so afraid of his own shadow and her wanting to impede, block, stop, even kill anyone or thing that doesn’t look, act, talk, think, and agree with him/her. They have history to prove their point—their history, their actions, their prejudice, their air of superiority.

They have seen and witnessed what they have done unto others and don’t want the same done unto them. ( The bible be damned when it suits)

Our ancestors slaughtered the Indians. They killed so many magnificent American Bison in an effort to starve the Indians they almost became extinct themselves. Some of our founding Fathers kept slaves ,we fought a civil war in which we killed our brothers and watched as many died needlessly in prison camps onboth sides, andwe imprisoned Japanese and German American citizens during WWII out of fear and fear alone.N no basis, no proof, no justification,….just a simple four letter word….”FEAR”, Vietnam……..

And here we are today…Make the Muslims wear a letter marking them as something different from us (as if their bourkas weren’t enough of a delineation, or their going to a mosque and not a big grandiose church, with a huge steeple and cross, built with the donations (tax free) of its working members.)Mark them like the Nazis did with the star of David, torture captives, imprison them for years on end, no charges filed, no court hearing, just plop them in Cuba somewhere and “forget about it.” Oh and don’t bring them here to Indiana or the mainland somewhere because, well, we’re afraid after all. They are different from us.

While you are at it,and forget about letting in those Syrian refugees trying to escape the daily horrors they live, or the Haitians who cross the straights in overcrowded boats at great expense and danger, or the Mexicans that pay hard-earned money to coyotes and then get dumped in the desert where hunger and thirst are their traveling companions. After all their motives aren’t just to live without fear and provide a better life for the children. No, they want to come here and change us, do us harm. They aren’t like us, remember?

And the blacks, Mexicans (legal or otherwise), Haitians, Canadians (we don’t complain about the Canadians because they bring MONEY with them) and the rest are all different, they look different, act different, play different music, have different customs, wear different clothes, and most importantly, they worship a false God because they don’t worship my God the “Right One.” They are not like us and they all hate whites and want to do us harm. (If that were true, could you blame them?)

The white man’s prejudices have kept these people locked in a cycle of poverty: low pay, worst parts of town, poor schools, crime-ridden neighborhoods, poor or little food, quantity and quality, an unequal justice system and so on. Why? Because they are not like us.

Remember the songs in the 70s? “Different strokes for different folks…we’ve got to live together… (when does this happen?)…” War, huh. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! Let’s say it again”…

Seems like that generation saw and learned something living through the horrible Vietnam war. However, I can think of several politicians who didn’t learn anything, (perhaps because they ducked out, copped out, or just plain ran out on their duty), and started a war under false pretense.War crimes, tribunals anyone?

If you are feeling ill then please try this simple, free, therapy: The next time you see a less fortunate person, or an immigrant or a person completely different from you whatever it may be, smile, say hello, share a compliment, think of something nice about them you can be honest about and share with them, leave them feeling better about themselves. And you will accomplish three things:

  1. They will feel better about themselves,

  2. They will feel better about you, and

  3. You will feel better about…..YOU!

Remember Michael Jackson?“We are the world, we are the children, we are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving…”

The infamous jazz musician, Dave Brubeck once said (when asked what it would take to heal the troubles in the world) “all we need is love.” ( I think I heard that somewhere else too.)

In the meantime …as the ol’ country doctor prescribed…

“you can take two aspirins and call me in the morning.”

The next “make me sick” topic at the Political Pharmacy: “income inequality” (or something else if it makes me feel worse in the meantime.)

Thanks for your time and thoughts!
